Plastic Surgeon, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Dr Bryce John Cowan BSc MSc MD PhD FRCSC FACMS
Dr Bryce Cowan is a formally trained plastic surgeon and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto after completing a Master’s degree in regenerative tissue healing. Dr. Cowan graduated from Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he was enrolled in the combined MD/PhD program. Dr. Cowan received his PhD research training, in Pathology, at the Hospital for Sick Children, studying cellular and matrix interactions with the immune system in wound healing and disease.
Following completion of his medical training, Dr. Cowan completed his residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Calgary in 2004, with a strong interest in facial reconstruction. He became interested in Mohs micrographic surgery through exposure to the local Calgary Mohs surgeon and saw a unique way of combining his interests in both pathology and surgery. In June 2005, he completed fellowship training in Mohs surgery at the University of British Columbia, becoming the first plastic surgeon in Canada certified to perform Mohs surgery by the American College of Mohs Surgery. He remains 1 of only 8 plastic surgeons worldwide trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
He is now Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Dermatology and Skin Science and remains one of only two plastic surgeons in Canada, certified to perform Mohs Surgery by the ACMS. Since arriving at UBC, Dr. Cowan has functioned as one of two primary surgical mentors for 13 ACMS surgical fellows and numerous dermatology, ENT and plastic surgical residents. To date, he remains the only ACMS trained plastic surgeon in academic surgical practice that functions as an American College of Mohs Surgery preceptor. This has made the UBC Mohs Fellowship one of the most competitive fellowships for Mohs training worldwide.
